FAQ
PYGL Frequently Asked Questions
When does the season start?
The season is expected to begin in January with our PYGL Winter Skills & Drills clinic. These are informal practices designed to refine skills and better prepare the girls for the upcoming spring season. The cost for the indoor sessions will be determined in advance and collected prior to the start of the clinics. Our Spring season will begin as we move outdoors in March/April as weather permits.
How long does the season last?
Once the indoor sessions are underway teams move outside typically in March/April. We are at the mercy of the City of Peabody to make the decision as to when the fields are playable, as is the case throughout the season. Game play starts in early April and ends in mid-June.
How are the teams created?
The coaches use the indoor sessions and early outdoor practices to gauge each player’s skill level, then work together in order to create balanced teams.
When are games scheduled? Are all of the games played in town?
Games are on Sundays; times vary week to week. PYGL participates in a “travel” league through Mass Youth Lacrosse. We typically play opposing teams in the Merrimack Valley, Cape Ann, and North Shore regions. Average travel time for away games is approximately 30 minutes. Our home games are usually at Peabody High School or Higgins Middle School.
When and how long are the practices? When is the schedule determined?
Typically teams practice twice per week for approximately 90 minutes each session. Most practices are on weekday afternoons into the early evenings. The practice schedule is determined by field availability and coaches’ availability. Team rosters and final practice schedules are set typically in late March.
Do I need to purchase a uniform or other special gear?
Yes, your daughter will need to purchase a PYGL shirt and shorts. Shirts and shorts may be used in subsequent years (depending on the condition of the shirt and shorts). Players also provide their own cleats or sneakers. Each player is responsible for having appropriate equipment. All of the girls will also need a women’s-game stick, protective goggles, and a colored mouth guard (No clear mouth guards! This is so the referees can see that they are actually wearing one).
At what age can my daughter play in the lacrosse league?
Beginning in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Are there tryouts for lacrosse?
Not for our Sunday Recreational League - the teams are based on the number of participants. For example, if enough 7th and 8th grade girls sign up to necessitate three U-15 teams, they will be balanced to the extent possible with equal numbers of new and returning players.
There will be tryouts for our Friday Night Select teams also knows as "Girls Tanner Select" or "GTS". See the above tab for more information!
Is there a “Select” program?
Yes, the girls’ programs at the U-13 and U-15 levels offer the opportunity to play on an invite only Select team known as "Girls Tanner Select" or "GTS". There is an additional fee for this team as well as a separate uniform. There may be an additional practice to prepare for the Friday night or Saturday game each week. Players are invited to participate on the Select team based on their coaches evaluations.
My daughter made a “Select” team, can she opt out of playing for a town team?
No. Without our strong Peabody program, there would be no Select program. Select players must attend town practices and games in addition to the select team commitment. Any select player that is regularly missing town practices or games will forfeit her position on the select team.
Which level is appropriate for my child?
PYGL uses a grade-based system for division of levels. We have a developmental-based introductory Kindergarten program. Our U-9 is 1st/2nd grades; U-11 is 3rd/4th grades, U-13 is 5th/6th grades, and U-15 is 7th/8th grades.
Can my daughter play an additional sport in the spring?
For families that choose to participate in multiple sports, it is inevitable that there will be some conflicts. Our coaches understand this and our policy as a recreational program is to not penalize players with less playing time in games due to absence at practices. We certainly encourage attendance at all lacrosse practices in order for each player to improve and therefore have more fun; however we know that players have a variety of commitments. When conflicts arise, we ask that parents keep the coaches informed so that practice plans and game plans can be altered if necessary. Our number one goal is to provide a great experience with the game of lacrosse for all participants.
I don’t see the answer to my question here. Whom can I ask?
